A Brief History of Cozy Corner Bar in Ridgewood

Cozy Corner Bar and Restaurant is located on the corner of 60th Street and 70th Avenue. The local bar is well known for their pool teams, pink party room, and bar food. Also, the bar has been around for many, many years. It is probably one of the last few corner bars in the neighborhood that is still open.

The Cozy Corner has reopened their kitchen into the late hours. A burger and a Budweiser is $10 and you can add fries for $2. You can also get chicken curry, nachos, Philly cheese steak, veggie burger, spicy bacon burger, chicken bacon ranch club, spaghetti with meatballs, cajun fried shrimp basket, BLT, soups of the day, chili, vegetarian curry, mozzarella sticks, side salad, fried mushrooms, chili cheese fries, chicken tenders, chicken wings, salads, cheeseburgers, and more!

Back in the day, there used to be a bar on every corner and many Ridgewood natives recall their grandparents hanging out at the bar in the 40’s to the 60’s. I have added an old photo of the bar as well as a photo that pre-dates Cozy Corner.

In the early 1900’s it was a little cafe, but sadly the metal facade no longer exists. You can see in the later photograph that it was covered in brick. The wallpaper in the front of the bar as well as the tin ceiling might be original. The statuesque wooden ladies at Cozy Corner are not originals, but definitely give the place a special feel. Most of the bar has not been renovated since the 1950’s… with the exception of their party room… it definitely feels 80’s.

More history about Cozy Corner via Forgotten New York:

Moeschle’s Cafe stood at the corner of what is now 70th Avenue and 60th Street. The photo is from 1912. Notice that they sold Rheingold beer, which was manufactured and bottled at a large brewery in Bushwick. Many Ridgewood residents worked in breweries on either side of the border. Today, the building’s restaurant tradition continues, but the establishment is now called Cozy Corner. Before the Prohibition era, there were 48 breweries in Brooklyn and Queens.
